Chapter Fifteen
Cari had done exactly as Justin had suggested she would and deposited them inside the aquarium after the place had closed for the day. She had assured them the alarms had been disabled and they would not be picked up by the surveillance cameras.
“Interesting parents you have,” Lucas commented as Justin took him on a private tour of the place. “I notice she didn’t say anything about how we’re going to get out of here when we’re ready to leave.”
“She’ll stay in this realm until I give her a call,” Justin explained—at least he hoped she would. It wouldn’t be the first time something had distracted her and resulted in him being landed in hot water.
Lucas didn’t question him and they walked hand in hand through the aquarium. “How it is someone who professes to hate the ocean works in an aquarium?”
“I don’t hate the ocean,” Justin insisted. “I just have no desire to go swimming in it. There are a lot of dangerous creatures out there, not to mention a lot of pollution.”
“It’s not so bad once you’re away from the land masses and the shipping routes,” Lucas explained. “Well, the pollution isn’t anyway. The dangerous creatures are all over, except in the sunken city, of course.”
“What keeps them away from Atlantis?” Justin asked. “I would have thought a city full of mermen and mermaids would be ideal feeding grounds.”
Lucas laughed. “It is, if they could only get past the sea dragons.”
Justin frowned as he tried to figure out what animal Lucas was referring to. He had never heard of a sea dragon, though he imagined it had to be a pretty large and fearsome creature if it kept things like sharks away from the city. “I’m guessing we call them something else.”
“No, you don’t,” Lucas replied. “The sea dragons are native to the city and aren’t found anywhere else in the world. Humans don’t know of their existence.”
“Are you sure? If they’re that big, surely they must have been spotted at some point in the past.”
“They have the power to make themselves and their surroundings invisible,” Lucas explained. “They keep themselves, the city and all the inhabitants within hidden from the world.”
“Is that why no one has discovered the location of Atlantis?”
“Partly. That and the fact most humans are searching in entirely the wrong place anyway.” Lucas let go of his hand as something caught his eye and he wandered across the room to peer into one of the tanks.
“You like sea horses?” Justin asked.
“I like most creatures of the sea,” Lucas replied. “These ones are quite rare in my part of the ocean, though. I never saw this breed before.”
“Understandable. There’s a hell of a lot of water out there.”
Lucas nodded and they carried on walking through the aquarium. Justin tried not to go through the building at a run, but his pace grew considerably faster as they neared the tunnel under the shark tank. When they finally arrived, they stopped at the edge and watched the sharks for several minutes.
